I have so much to to do this week- fun stuff like filling out medical insurance applications, filing a bunch of paperwork from our taxes and bills, and making dentist appointments for everybody.  I was super busy last week making lunch for the 65 teachers and staff at our school on Thursday and then catering an event for 250 people with my sister and sister-in-laws on Friday, so my house needs lots of help too.  There’s laundry and ironing piled up, weeds to pull and floors to scrub.

That’s why I spent yesterday afternoon working on a new Dresden Plate pillow for my family room.  I’m a super responsible adult.  (No, I didn’t jump sky high when I heard the garage door open and my husband coming home from work a little early.  I certainly didn’t try to quickly clean up fabric from the kitchen table before he walked through the door either.  That would be acting guilty!)

When Emma came home with her Dresden plate from Nan’s house, it put a bee in my bonnet.  I just had to make my own dresden project.

To make the wedges I used the Easy Dresden Ruler By Darlene Zimmerman .  Which I highly recommend, by the way, it’s super easy to use.

All the fabrics for the pillow came from scraps from the half square triangle on point quilt that will be in the same room.  I’m still hand quilting the half square quilt, which might take me five more months.  (I actually enjoy working on it in little snippets here and there before bed or while waiting for a soccer game to start.  I am not fast or particularly good at hand quilting, but I am enjoying the journey and am a little over half way through.)

I was able to stop by The Material Girls Quilts on my way home from running an errand yesterday and found the most wonderful cotton/linen (Whitewash by Meg Hawkey of Crabapple Hill from Lecien) for the background fabric.

Look at the little detail of lace printed down the edges of the fabric.  I didn’t plan on it, but I like the lace detail so much, I cut it to have the detail run down one side of the pillow.

The old pillows I’m replacing are super worn and flat, so I think give them a spruce up with new batting… and save the money on buying new forms.

I think I might have to play hooky again today since I can’t wait to finish…

I’m part of a new quilting bee called the Bees Knees.

A few weeks ago I received my first fabric in the mail- a Moda Bella White and two fat eighths of Lecien Happy Mochi Yum Yum from Sherri of A Quilting Life.

She said she wanted a sampler and that she loved pinwheels, stars, log cabins and houses.  The finished block needed to measure 12″ x 12″ but otherwise the block was up to us.

I looked around for block inspiration and found a block I liked on Flickr.

And last night I my finished block.

For the most part, it was an easy block to figure, flying geese and half square triangles.  But I had to puzzle over the outside center blocks for a few minutes.

It occurred to me that I might try making flying geese with the turquiose and white, then turn it around and add the Happy Mochi fabric like another flying geese.  I’m so glad it worked like a charm.

Now I just need to get it sent in the mail.  But before I do, I’m toying with the idea of making another block, since I still have fabric left over, and this time adding some warm colored fabric.  Either way it was a fun little project.

I’m so glad I said yes to the Bees Knees!
