“ I am still determined to be cheerful and happy, in whatever situation I may be; for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances.”
– Martha Washington
It’s President’s Day here in the United States of America. And behind every great president was often an even greater lady. I loved that quote from Martha Washington when I ran across it. My other favorite quotable first lady was, of course, Eleanor Roosevelt. It seemed she never opened her mouth but to say something wise or brilliant.
Here are just a few of my favorite quotes from Eleanor:
“A woman is like a tea bag- you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
“It’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
“A little simplification would be the first step toward rational living, I think.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
My favorite from Elinor: Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift…that’s why we call it the Present.
She was quite a woman.
I also Love Eleanor Roosevelt what a great women!
I also Love GREAT Quotes!
Thanks.
Love the Martha Washington quote. Do you have a source for it?
Hi Nancy, I found the quote on a quote website: http://www.quotationspage.com/quotes/Martha_Washington/ But I am not sure where the quotes originates… I suspect from a diary or letter. It is found on most of the quote websites like Brainy Quote and Think Exist.
I love your blog!! I think Martha had it right…it is our attitude that determines our happiness. Thanks for sharing
