One Spring Day

This past week we’ve had a roller coaster of spring.  Snow falling one minute… sun peaking out and melting it all the next.

Today is grey skies.  But at least it’s warm and I plan to spend part of it out in my garden.

Pulling weeds…   Already?

And planting peas and lettuce.   I’m a little later than I’d like for planting my peas… but better late than never.

I always soak my peas overnight before planting them.  It gives them a little bit of a head start.

One thing I can count on when working in my garden is the happiness it brings me. We all need those activities in our lives that restore our sense of balance and bring us peace.  Working in the garden is one of those activities for me.

For someone else… it’s something different altogether…  Whatever that activity is, it’s critical that we find it.  Cultivate it.  Do it with purpose:

Today I am working in the garden.  Today I will feel the warm spring air and smell the soil and I will be content.

Hey Calli-Well said! There is something about quiet outside sounds and a little green, the faint smell of growing and blooming things that is, honestly, good for the soul. It probably helps that even though we had frost warnings last night, it is sunny and 68 here in NW Arkansas! :) Happy gardening…

  • Well, I went and bought my peas but haven’t planted them yet for the very same reason up north–too cold, wet, and snowy! My goal is to plant them this weekend. I’m glad now I know how to give them a good head start. Thanks for the tip.

  • I would love to have a vegetable garden. One day when my husband and I have more time. Till then we will live vicariously through other gardeners! Good to know about the peas!

  • Our weather is crazy, too! Yesterday was beautiful and today was rainy and cool. I wish Mother Nature would make up her mind. I’d love to have a big garden someday. I have great memories of being in our vegetable garden as a child with my mom, picking sugar snap peas and tomatoes. The good old days… :)

When I saw your bowl of peas I knew exactly what they were. I have the same thing sitting on my kitchen counter this morning. It is a tad late for some of those early things here too, but the weather has been crazy and the soil has been too wet. I’m just planting today too. You’re right, better late than never.

Hell to all. I don’t know how I got here but am glad I am here. I loke your site. Enjoyed the responses.
I use to have a large garden but have not been able to tend to one for years now. I still dream of another big garden. Now I garden out ofMedium to large pots on my front porch. Roma tomato, cherry tomato, bell pepper, parsley, basil, rosemary. Joping I can add afew more herbs. I also plant cucumbers in large bucket. Of couorse I don’t get much fruits but the herbs do well. If your porch area is unnny most of the day you will be surprised how much fruit you will get from these potted plants.
