This past weekend my husband went skiing with my son. Last weekend I pulled a muscle skiing and figured I better take it easy until it’s all better.
Since the boys in our family like to ski off cliffs and the girls love the groomers, the girls opted to stay home with me.
“What would you like to do today?” I asked.
“Can we watch Pride and Prejudice and knit?”
Oh my goodness!
I think I’ve died and gone to heaven.
After getting some exercise by going snowshoeing and the required a cup of hot chocolate after, we girls got out our knitting and turned on a cozy fire.
First the girls had a debate about which movie version to watch.
I was highly amused to sit back and listen to their musings. “I like the big sister better in the new movie (the Keira Knightley version).” “I like Mr. Darcy better in the long movie lots better…”
In the end we watched the longer BBC version of Pride and Prejudice . My girls decided it was the better of the two movies… and I couldn’t agree more.
Since I haven’t knitted in a long time, other than helping my girls to learn, I decided to start a project with yarn I had in my stash.
I’ve been wanting some of these for a while. They are the perfect thing to keep my hands warm when I am at the sewing machine or on the computer. I happened across the free pattern from Martha Stewart.
Most of my time was spent picking up dropped stitches and otherwise helping my girls with their scarves, so I didn’t get super far. Plus, I’m really rusty. But for all that, I can tell this is going to be a fast and easy project. I forgot how much I love knitting. It’s not often I make something for myself and I can’t wait to finish them.
It goes to show, it doesn’t take much to make a perfect weekend.
While I’m thinking about Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett, have you seen The King’s Speech?
I saw it last week and absolutely loved it. It stars none other than Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth) as the lead character. It was a surprise to realize that Elizabeth Bennett (Elizabeth Ehle) was also in the movie playing a minor role. The scene when the two of them meet was enchanting.
Love those! And, I have to say that I really, really love the new movie, especially the Mr. Darcy in the new one. The old one is awesome, though, because it’s so long – you can lose yourself in it!
How cool to spend a day with your girls, sharing interests and being together. That does sound like a heavenly day!
I would have been just in heaven too! my five year old is a few years away from that, but sometimes she says she wants to go look at fabric! sigh…
I want to learn to knit!!
Sounds like a perfect day to me! I also saw “The King’s Speech” last week and thought it was great. Geoffery Rush was charming, Colin Firth perfectly uptight and a wonderful glimpse into a moment of British history. I think it is well worth seeing.
Nothing better than a lap full of a quilting project and Jane Austen movies on TV!
That would be my idea of a heavenly day too:-)!!!
I love that movie! I really like Colin Firth, so I always prefer a movie with him in it. A&E does a really good job on the movies they make. I’m not a knitter, but quilting and watching long movies on a cold day is wonderful.
Most of the time I’m totally fine with having two boys and no girls yet, but then I read something like this and I get so jealous! Someday I hope I have a girl to share Mr. Darcy with! Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy — *sigh*
Sounds dreamy! As far as I’m concerned, Colin Firth IS Mr. Darcy. My favorite thing about this time of year: holidays out of the way and a new season of Masterpiece Theater. I seriously get giddy.
I love that BBC version of P&P! Elizabeth and Darcy are just right. Sounds like a delightful afternoon.
what a lovely way to spend time with your girls! and I love Pride and Prejudice, any of them. Tho I agree with you, the BBC version was the best!
Happy Knitting to you and yours!
I love watching the BBC version I like Mr. Wickham in the short one better but that’s the only better thing. I will pop the BBC version in and crochet away!
Sounds like a perfect day to me – I recently found the BBC Pride and Prejudice on DVD and I’ve watched the whole series about three times in the last 2 months – total addict. Though watching it while knitting at midnight was a bad idea – I got so caught up in the drama that I dropped quite a few stitches!
I know this post is a bit older, but I had to leave a comment! It gave me a good chuckle, to know we’re not the only ones! My nieces (aged 16 – 22) come over on Tuesday nights with two of their friends: one with crochet, one knitting, one tatting, two embroidering…. and we watch the BBC dramas. Best, of course, is this P&P, but now that we’ve made it through all the Jane Austen adaptations, we’re starting on a couple Dickens. Not quite the same to do needlework by – but it’s still great fun! And yes, The King’s Speech was quite good. And Downton Abbey, too! ~MC
Oh my goodness, I love Pride and Prejudice!! I don’t ever remember seeing the A&E version a first time… I’ve seen the Kiera Knightly one, and it just isn’t as good… because you can’t quote the book directly from the movie!! Anyways, it’s always hilarious to see my brother come and sit on the couch while we’re watching it (pretending he isn’t watching it) and laughing at everything Mr Bennet says.
