Books on my Mind

My Mom left early this morning for the long drive from Salt Lake City to Kansas City for Quilt Market.  She is helping her dear friends, Norma and Joyce of Geoff’s Mom’s Pattern Co. with their booth at the show.

In preparation for the hours in the car, she called last week to get some ideas for books.  We ended up talking about a long list of books we’ve both loved and books on our to read lists…

I just finished Gift from the Sea, one of my Mom’s favorite books.  It’s a very short read, but I took it slow and sweet, reading only a few pages a night right before bed.  It was that kind of book, one I needed to read and then think about.  Even though it was written over 50 years ago, it is still pertinent to my life.

I suggested Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven by Fannie Flagg.  Which, unfortunately or fortunately, they had already read…  If you haven’t, it’s treat.  It’s a book full of lots of humor and wisdom.

This is the next book on my listening reading list: Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking.  My husband just finished it and we’ve talked a lot about it.  He put in on my iPod so I’ve got something to do while I work in the yard.

She ended up loading a range of books for their drive from Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese to In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson, the same author who wrote Devil in the White City, which we both thought was riveting.

After Quiet, I’m looking forward to rereading The Scarlet Pimpernel which I read many years ago… so it will be like reading for the first time.

Since Summer is just around the corner and I’d love hear what’s on your favorite read list or to read list.  With weeds that always seem to be popping up in my yard, I know I’ll get in lots of quality time for listening to good books.

Good post! I listen to books a lot because I travel for work. I recently finished 11/22/63 (Steven King) which was like 29 hours and quite good. The Lovely Bones and the Virgin Suicides are both two EXCELLENT novels (despite the dark titles & subjects). I liked Cutting for Stone, but I liked The Book Thief better. Another book with a dark subject matter but beautifully written and full of hope.

In non-fiction, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is a MUST READ. Truly wonderful book. I also recently finished Seabiscuit, also by her. I’m reading Mark Twain’s Autobiography on and off right now. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver is her family’s experience eating local for one year, including growing & raising/ slaughtering much of their food. I found it challenging in a good way, and rarely judgmental. Loved Bossypants by Tina Fey.

  • Debra:

I agree about Unbroken. I’m a librarian and I resisted reading it for the longest time, but I loved it. We read Cutting for Stone in book club last year, and it was also excellent. Another title I might not have picked up on my own. Try Maine by J. Courtney Sullivan. It was a good “beach read”. I love my audiobooks too!

I loved Unbroken and The Book Thief too! They are two of my favorite books I’ve read in the past couple of years. Thank you so much for the other great tips!

  • Oh you’ll have to tell me how you like In the Garden of Beasts, I found it so boring I had to quit half way through. I really loved The Devil in the White City though, especially since I’m a Chicago girl! I agree about Unbroken, you must read it! Also The Glass Castle is fantastic. We’re doing the long drive to Utah this summer and I’m looking for some books to listen to as well!

  • I just recently read two books by Susanna Kearsley – the Rose Garden and the Winter Sea. I really enjoyed them both – historical fiction.
Another good WWII fictional/love story that was deep and well written was The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons. It was one of those books that “stayed” with you and I just loved.

  • Meghan:

I always love your book recommendations! Keep them coming!

  • Mikell:

One of my favorites is “The Secret Garden” by Kate Morton. If you like fairy tales, this is such an enchanting book.

  • I love Gift from the Sea..and will add these other books to my list! I’m always looking for good book ideas!

PS Is there an on-line tutorial for the block you made me…I have received a couple of e-mails asking for one.

    • Calli:

Hi Sherri, I don’t know of a tutorial, maybe I should make one : ). I really love that block. The Bee quilt is going to be so wonderful!

  • Cutting for Stone was a great audiobook. Thanks for this post – I enjoy getting recommendations.
